Saskatoon Cycles January 2021 Newsletter

February 12th is International Winter Bike to Work Day

This year’s Winter Bike to Work Day is just around the corner. Many of us are working from home these days, but that’s no reason not to get out for a ride on February 12th. You can head out for a spin before you sit down at your home workspace, take a lunch break pedal midday, or hop on your bike to decompress at the end of a Zoom-filled workday. Be ready to snap a cycling selfie on February 12th. We’re planning a fun contest; stay tuned to our social media accounts for all the details.

Foodbank fundraiser in memory of Cathy Watts

A group of local woodworkers is running a fundraiser for the Saskatoon Foodbank and Learning Centre, in memory of Cathy Watts. Make a donation in your own name by phone (306-664-6565), online, in person, or by mail (Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre, 202 Ave C South, Saskatoon, SK, S7M 1N2). After you’ve made your donation, contact Marilyn at m.hosaluk@sasktel.net or 306 382 2380 to get your name entered into their draw. You could win a great prize, including a selection of homemade jams and jellies including Apple, Lemon Ginger Marmalade and Sour Cherry Jelly and a copy of Cathy Watts book on her quilting adventures

Our circle of “Friends” is growing

Welcome to our two newest Friends of Cycling sponsors, The Little Market Box and Life Outside Gear Exchange. They join Bike Doctor, Doug’s Spoke N’ Sport, and 9 Mile Legacy Brewing. All of these local businesses are helping support the work of Saskatoon Cycles. So show them some love by giving them your business!

Warm up your Friday mornings at Hot Drinks Outside

Our new weekly, socially distanced, meetup is going strong. Every Friday morning, we gather outside from 7 am to 9 am to sip on coffee or tea, meet new friends, and celebrate winter. Thank you to the local businesses that have hosted us so far: D’lish by Tish Cafe, The Little Market Box, and Life Outside Gear Exchange. Watch our social media for each week’s location.

This year’s Global Winter Cycling Congress is virtual

The 2021 edition of the annual Global Winter Cycling Congress will happen online on February 11th. It will highlight four winter cycling themes:

  • Changing Gears – politics, advocacy and municipal policy, gender, race, climate and social justice
  • Keeping the Wheels Turning – urban planning and design, equipment, how-to’s, maintenance and operation
  • Pedalling for the Future – social, financial, physical and mental health, psychology, community building business, marketing or communications
  • For the Love of Winter – Art – No two snowflakes are alike, and this is a conference unlike any other. Winter is magic. Share your gift. Tell a story.

The main congress theme, Viva La Bike Boom!, brings attention to the recent global boom in bicycle sales and reflects the variety of topics in the congress programme. Visit the event website for all the details, including how to register.
