Saskatoon Cycles October 2021 Newsletter

AGM coming up November 3rd

If you are a member of Saskatoon Cycles you are invited to attend our virtual AGM at 7 pm on November 3rd. In order to participate, you need to pre-register by midnight on Tuesday, November 2.

Inaugural Keep Rolling event a success

Thank you to everyone who supported our inaugural Keep Rolling event on October 16th. The weather was fantastic and the site was magic with the view of the South Saskatchewan river – our city’s pride and beauty. On top of the gorgeous day, I was constantly reminded of Shakespeare’s wisdom as the event was held at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan site. Through our participant survey, we are learning what went well and what needs improvement. For those of you who have not yet completed it, please do so — it takes less than three minutes. Read Kira’s full blog post about the event.

Pre-order your new design t-shirt

We are thrilled to launch our new Saskatoon Cycles t-shirts. The fun design features three local critters — a deer, beaver, and fox — riding their bikes up the Broadway Bridge. A big shout-out to local illustrator Lesia Karalash (Lesia Dawn Design) who created the amazing artwork. To order yours — and to get an early start on Christmas shopping — hop on over to our online store.

Depave event coming May 2022

The Saskatchewan Environmental Society (SES) will be holding a “Depave” event in Saskatoon in May 2022. Depave is a project of Green Communities Canada that aims to improve rain flow in urban centres by removing asphalt (“depaving”) and cultivating the site with native plants and trees. Over 50 Depave events have already taken place throughout Canada, though our event will be the first Depave in Saskatchewan! For more information on Depave initiatives visit https://depaveparadise.ca/.

SES is looking for a suitable site for our event. The requirements for a site are:

  • Located within Saskatoon
  • Currently paved (asphalt)
  • Size of ~100m2
  • Publicly accessible
  • Soil that is not contaminated
  • A keen site owner that will allow us to remove asphalt and replace with plants
  • Volunteers, staff or community members to maintain the area post-planting
  • Examples of sites could include unused parking spaces, paved schoolyards, courtyards, paved boulevards, etc.

If you have suggestions for a potential Depave site in Saskatoon, send an email to depave@environmentalsociety.ca

For sale: Bike locker

We have a lightly used bike locker for sale. It is the same type of unit that’s available for rent on the USask campus. These lockers are constructed of durable, recycled black plastic (except for doors and hardware) and come with both locking mechanism and padlock. If you’d like to make an offer, send an email to info@saskatooncycles.org.
