Riversdale Bike Patio – official opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony

September 27, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Seeing a need for better cycling infrastructure in their neighbourhood, two Riversdale businesses have
rolled up their sleeves and converted 1 motor vehicle parking spot into 20 bicycle parking spots.

The Riversdale Bike Patio was constructed late this summer on 20th Street West and is a joint project
involving 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, Doug’s Spoke N Sport and the City of Saskatoon. It is a year-round facility
and converts a traditional private-use parking patio into a public amenity.

“It is poetic for the Bike Patio to be built in Riversdale – the home to many cycle shops over the years,”
says Jay Woytowich, owner of Doug’s Spoke N Sport. “People around town remember names like Walter’s
Cycle and Joe’s Cycle and associate them with the Riversdale of yesterday. In 1936, there were 5 bicycle
shops in Riversdale alone. The Bike Patio helps us continue that legacy into the future.”

The Bike Patio is a two-year pilot project with the City of Saskatoon and the installation can be adjusted
as needed to accommodate ongoing public use. It was planned, designed and built with private sector
investment from 9 Mile Legacy Brewing and Doug’s Spoke N Sport and contribution from the City’s
Planning and Development Division (Urban Design). It is open for the general public to use at no cost,
regardless of whether they patronize the businesses involved.

“The reality is many people ride their bikes to our street and needed better infrastructure. It was
important to us to show some leadership from the business community in improving our civic amenities
and work collaboratively with the City in finding solutions,” says Shawn Moen, CEO and Co-Founder of 9
Mile Legacy Brewing. “Our hope is that, if the Bike Patio is well-received, many more can pop up in other
Saskatoon neighbourhoods.”

A grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Bike Patio will take place on Friday, September 27, 2019 at
5:00. Attendees will receive a free commemorative sticker for their bike or helmet.
